Toward a Pragmatic Integration of Activity Theory with Usage-Centered Design

چکیده
Activity modeling is a systematic approach to organizing and representing the contextual aspects of tool use that is both well-grounded in an accepted theoretical framework and embedded within a proven design method. Activity theory provides the vocabulary and conceptual framework for understanding the human use of tools and other artifacts. Usage-centered design provides the methodological scaffolding for applying activity theory in practice. In this Technical Paper, activity theory and usage-centered design are outlined and the connections between the two are highlighted. Simple extensions to the models of usage-centered design are introduced that together succinctly model the salient and most essential features of the activities within which tool use is embedded. Although not intended as a tutorial, examples of Activity Maps, Activity Profiles, and Participation Maps are provided. Introduction Activity theory is a way of describing and characterizing the structure of human activity of all kinds. First introduced by Russian psychologists Rubinshtein, Leontiev, and Vigotsky in the early part of the last century, activity theory has more recently gained increasing attention among interaction designers and others in the human-computer interaction and usability communities (see, for example, Gay and Hembrooke, 2004). Interest was given a significant boost when Donald Norman suggested activity-theory and activity-centered design as antidotes to some of the putative ills of “human-centered design” (Norman, 2005). Norman, who has been credited with coining the phrase “user-centered design,” suggested that too much attention focused on human users may be harmful, that to design better tools designers need to focus

Usage-Centered Design and Software Engineering: Models for Integration
This paper argues for a model-driven framework for integrating human interface engineering with software engineering. The usage-centered design process, a robust and proven process grounded in software engineering, is briefly described and contrasted with traditional user-centered approaches. The connections between the core models of usage-centered design and their software engineering counter...
متن کاملOn the Effect of Task-based language Teaching on the Pragmatic Competence (Illocutionary Force) of the Iranian Male and Female Students
The present research study, based on a systematic procedure, investigates the impact of the illocu- tionary and locutionary forces of the pragmatic competence on the Iranian male and female language teaching juniors. By virtue of gaining a persuasive and forceful ultimate goal of this study 400 lan- guage teaching Iranian juniors attended this study. Phase 1 witnessed a T-test where 60 males an...
متن کاملThe Semiotics of Usage-Centered Design
User interface design is a complex activity, which makes it difficult to control and master. A well designed user interface can be seen as one where designers have correctly mapped the application domain onto the solution domain. This mapping, or bridge, may be helped or hindered by the design methodology and the success of any software engineering methodology depends on how good a bridge it pr...
متن کاملPredictors of Physical Activity in Type 2 Diabetic Patients Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior
Objective: Low physical activity is the fourth risk factor of death worldwide. Approximately 27% risk of diabetes is reduced by 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. The present study was designed to determine the predictors of physical activity promotion among type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study 320 patients with type 2 diabetes were in...
متن کاملIranian EFL Learners' Perception of the Efficacy of Activity Theory-based Reading Comprehension
Any language classroom is a distinctive learning context offering numerous affordances that might be perceived effectively, remain unnoticed, or even act as constraints. Therefore, exploring students' perception toward a particular method of instruction is crucial since it may produce a reliable piece of evidence for teachers to confirm or refute the effectiveness of the intended instructional ...
